All on 4 dental implants Bronx, NY
A permanent & fixed denture solution
There was a time when dentures were the only option for replacing missing teeth. Advances in more modern dentistry have lead to a permanent or “fixed” denture solution. This procedure is referred to as the “all-on-4” dental implant treatment.
Your Bronx Dentist employs a highly skilled and trained periodontist on our team to implement this procedure. It may be time to throw away those dentures and upgrade to a more secure treatment approach.
What is an All-on-4 or fixed denture?
It starts with dental implants
The all-on-4 treatment first starts with 4 or more dental implants. These implants are inserted directly into the jawbone and secured using a titanium fixture. An “abutment” is then fastened to the end of the implant fixture that would hold either a single crown (if replacing a single tooth) or the all-on-4 bridge.
A secure bridge is fastened to the implants
After the implants have been inserted and given time to heal, the bridge will then be “fastened” or secured to the abutments of the implants. Where as dental implants are made from titanium, the bridge is generally made from zirconia. The bridge’ composition gives it a very natural look and feel.
The bridge is then loaded (attached) using titanium screws that go through small holes in the bridge, and secured to the implant abutments. The finished product is then a permanent and highly secure implant supported denture.
When is an All on 4 the best option?
If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, all-on-4’s could be a great treatment option. The dental implants used to support the permanent bridge, are secured directly into the jaw bone. This helps preserve your bone from deterioration due to tooth loss. Once you’ve lost one or more of your adjoining teeth, the jaw bone starts to deteriorate and recede. Over time this leads to a more aged look with the bone and tissue recession taking place.
The implants from all-on-4 procedures however, help to solidify the bone and stop recession. This helps protect patients from the premature aging associated with tooth loss. The sooner you start losing multiple teeth, the better it is to consider dental implants as a replacement option. If you’re already a denture wearer, it may be a good idea to contact our Bronx dental implant specialist / periodontist immediately.
Are tooth extractions necessary for all-on-4’s?
Tooth extractions may be necessary for the all on four procedure. This is a discussion you will have with your dentist or periodontist to determine which course of treatment is right for you. If you’re already suffering from multiple tooth loss or advanced periodontal disease, tooth extraction may be the recommended course of action.
